Dow trainees recently received hands-on emergency response training.

The Fort Saskatchewan Dow site hosted a rail car and road emergency response training on June 25 and June 27.

Through their partnership with GATX Corporation and the Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER) initiative, a TankerTrainer mobile classroom — a 33,500-gallon tank car outfitted with a variety of fittings, coatings, and configurations — was on site for the two days.

"That allowed the people going through the training to get hands-on learning experience for what they might experience in a real incident," said Jess MacDonald, site public affairs manager.

Dow has hosted training exercises like this in the past, but it has been several years since they were able to bring the tank car on site.

"It’s important to us to inform communities about the measures that are in place to ensure the safe transportation of products by road and rail.” said Randy Mak, National TRANSCAER committee chair and Dow Canada hydrocarbons plant operator. "I’m always happy when we can bring the training to communities and help emergency responders feel more comfortable dealing with rail and road issues."

Dow's mutual aid partner, NRCAER, played a large role in helping bring the training exercise to the region.
